Preaching Christ From All of Scripture

When you ask most people, “Where do you find Jesus Christ in the Scriptures?” The answer you are most likely to get is that he is found in the gospel narratives. Sure, Jesus is found in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but he is also found in all of Scripture, including the Old Testament.

In fact, every page from Genesis all the way to Revelation speaks about Jesus Christ, and he is present there. This is why, in one sense, all of Scripture is the gospel. It is the good news of God’s answer to your sinfulness, and that answer is Jesus Christ.

The risen Lord Jesus, when he appeared to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:27, we read, “And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” In other words, Jesus preached Christ from all the Bible.

Christian preaching is a glorious proclamation of the grace of God to sinful, rebellious humanity. And we as preachers ought to preach Christ from all of Scripture, for that is Christian preaching. That is how Jesus preached.

And unless we preach Christ from all of Scripture, we are not engaging in Christian preaching, nor are we being faithful to the witness of the Scripture.
